*LA Phil presented Herbie Hancock once more at the Walt Disney concert hall. Herbie led the quintet that included Terence Blanchard on trumpet, James Genus on bass, Lionel Loueke on guitar & vocals and Jaylen Petinaud on drums. The audience was ushered into musical bliss from the first note to the last.

At eighty-six years young, Herbie glided from one keyboard instrument to the next demonstrating the same artistry that has sustained his musical career for six decades.  Each player on stage executed their scores with the dynamics of an entire section. Terrance Blanchard seemed to play in harmony with himself. James Genus thumbed and thumped bass lines that mimicked a bass trio.

Lionel Loueke strummed like a fever spreading across a myriad of strings.  Jaylen Petinaud was more than a drummer; he was a percussive force.  The set was a cascade of compositions that drove progressive, alternative, classical and straight-ahead jazz groves into a cacophony of symphonic euphoria.

The night was not void of funk as Mr. Hancock strapped on his keytar and evoked brilliance on the instrument that helped shape 1970’s electric jazz, funk and rock.

Herbie Hancock is more than a jazz legend, he’s a sonic architect, a 14-time Grammy-winning visionary whose brilliance has echoed across decades. Born in Chicago in 1940, his genius announced itself early.  At just 11 years old, he performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, signaling the arrival of a prodigy destined to reshape music itself.

Influenced by the elegance of Oscar Peterson and the introspective lyricism of Bill Evans, Hancock fused tradition with curiosity. That curiosity extended beyond the keys.  He nurtured a deep fascination with electronics and science, ultimately double majoring in music and electrical engineering at Grinnell College.

By 1960, his trajectory shifted into high gear when he was discovered by trumpeter Donald Byrd. After sharpening his craft in sessions alongside Byrd, Phil Woods, and Oliver Nelson, Hancock stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist with Blue Note Records. His 1963 debut album, Takin’ Off was a statement of intent, bold, inventive, and instantly impactful. It featured the now-iconic groove “Watermelon Man.”

That same year, destiny called again when Miles Davis invited Hancock to join his legendary quintet. From that moment forward, history didn’t just unfold, it swung, soared, and electrified.

Honors have followed Hancock like a standing ovation that never fades. In July 2011, he was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador by Director-General Irina Bokova, affirming his global cultural impact. In February 2016, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award cemented his place among music’s Supreme beings.

LA Phil’s next presentation of Herbie Hancock is in celebration of Miles Davis at the Hollywood Bowl on August 19. One legend celebrates another and any experience with LA Phil’s Creative Chair of Jazz is not to be missed. Herbie Hancock is a timeless musical wonder. The music world is all the better because he is still here going strong and playing even stronger. For info: Herbie Hancock Celebrates Miles Davis | Hollywood Bowl
