BURNABY Mayor Mike Hurley and Concord Pacific on Thursday announced new plans and the start of construction for the City of Burnaby’s first major new community park in more than 20 years to serve the generations of families already living nearby.

Dawson Park will be built by Concord Pacific and gifted to the City of Burnaby upon completion scheduled for the summer of 2028. It will be the size of five city blocks and situated along Dawson Street in Burnaby across the street from Oasis, the latest phase of the Concord Brentwood master-planned community.

Terry Hui, Concord Pacific President and CEO said, “The delivery of Dawson Park continues our 30-year tradition of creating parks and amenities for the cities where we build. With the handover of Dawson Park, the total parkland developed by Concord Pacific across the country will exceed 70 acres—more than half the size of Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver.”

Dawson Park will be Burnaby’s first new community park since Taylor Park was delivered in 2005. The new two phase 10-acre community park will service a rapidly growing community and deliver much needed outdoor amenities for families and residents in the growing Brentwood neighbourhood. It will create a welcoming space for people of all ages to gather, play, and build connections through shared outdoor experiences.

A variety of walking trails will meander and loop throughout the park and the entire development when completed, with the longest path at 1.5 km. The park will support both active recreation and casual use by families and community members. It will be complemented by a restored natural creek, a new connecting pathway leading northward to the Burnaby Urban Trail along Lougheed Highway, and an eventual overpass connecting the park to the Central Valley Greenway to the south, enhancing opportunities for everyday outdoor activity and connectivity.

“Dawson Park will be a major addition to Brentwood, creating a new community park that gives residents access to outstanding outdoor amenities right in their neighbourhood,” said Hurley. “Combined with improvements to Dawson Street, this project will help make Brentwood an even more livable, connected and people‑friendly community as it continues to grow.”

The remaining two-acre second phase to the southwest of the main section of the park will be developed at a later stage as surrounding construction activity is completed. This will ensure that the park can be delivered in a coordinated and efficient manner. This phased approach will allow the majority of the park to open earlier for community use, while planning continues for the completion of the remaining portion.

Once complete, the full park will provide a cohesive, accessible space that supports a healthy, connected, and family-friendly community including shared uses with a new planned 30 classroom elementary school immediately adjacent to the park that will serve up to 900 students.
