By Zoila Palma: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement saying that the “Prime Minister and his Cabinet are now scrambling to put a square peg in a round hole. Truth be told: it can’t fit.
After months and months of calls for meaningful consultation with key stakeholders on the proposed $80 million BTL acquisition of SMART/Speednet, we are only now seeing what appears to be a veiled attempt at “consultation” after the decision has effectively been made.”
Panton said that the Opposition call “on the BTL Board of Directors to speak directly and openly with the people who ultimately have the greatest stake in this matter, the Belizean people, who are the primary owners of BTL, the workers and contributors whose monies are entrusted to the Social Security Board.”
Panton called out Prime Minister Briceno saying that he promised Belizeans the “gold standard” for transparency and accountability.
“Belizeans deserve transparency before decisions are made not explanations after the fact. On the proposed BTL/SMART acquisition, our position remains unequivocal:
NO MEANS NO.
WE SAY NO TO THE $80 MILLION BTL/SMART ACQUISITION,” Panton expressed.
