Open house highlights hands-on workforce training and expanded access to affordable homeownership
Milwaukee Community Crossroads (MCC) will celebrate the completion of two newly constructed homes in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood through its YouthBuild program with an open house in Metcalfe Park. The event will run from noon to 2 p.m., with opening remarks at 12:30 p.m., and will highlight hands-on workforce training that prepares young adults for careers in the skilled trades while expanding access to affordable homeownership in Milwaukee.
MCC operates the YouthBuild program as part of Cream City YouthBuild through Employ Milwaukee. The paid pre-apprenticeship program serves Milwaukee residents ages 18 to 24 and provides hands-on carpentry and construction experience. Participants build affordable housing while preparing for full-time employment or apprenticeships in the trades and developing the skills to succeed in work and life.
“We are proud to celebrate the completion of these two homes in Metcalfe Park and the collaboration that made them possible,” said Jake Weiler, director of housing at MCC. “These homes create homeownership opportunities for early childhood educators, add quality housing to the neighborhood, and give our YouthBuild members meaningful hands-on construction experience that prepares them for careers in the trades. This work strengthens households, creates opportunity for young people and invests in the future of the community.”
The open house will give community members, supporters, and local leaders an opportunity to tour the new homes, meet the young adults who helped build them and learn more about the impact of MCC’s YouthBuild program. MCC will provide a light lunch and refreshments.
The American Job Center, Bader Philanthropies, Bliffert Lumber, Brandon’s Toolshed, City of Milwaukee, Community Development Alliance (CDA), Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Employ Milwaukee, LISC Milwaukee, NARI Milwaukee Foundation, Northwestern Mutual and Zilber Family Foundation supported this project.
