By Zoila Palma: Today, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) advised the public of poor road conditions associated with the ongoing rehabilitation of approximately 200 meters (650 feet) of the Sarteneja Road.
Motorists are advised to drive with care and attention while passing through this active work zone located just before the northern approach to the Pueblo Nuevo Bridge.
MIDH says that rehabilitation works at this location include the construction of a 200-meter low-level precast reinforced concrete bridge with ten spans. The construction period is anticipated to be eight months, with a scheduled completion date of mid-February 2027.
Current works include preparing locations for the installation of driven concrete piles by removing large boulders and other underlying obstructions. More than 60% of the precast elements (85-foot-long concrete piles and 70-foot-long AASHTO Type III girders) have been fabricated and are available for installation.
The construction of a bridge structure at this location is the most effective long-term solution to maintain an all-weather road. Extremely poor underlying soils and the close proximity of both the lagoon and the river mean that this portion of the road remains saturated year-round.
MIDH added that while the road through the work zone will remain open and in reasonable condition, the motoring public is urged to exercise caution and remain attentive while driving, especially under these adverse conditions.
