New Mural in Punta Gorda celebrates East Indian heritage and history

By Zoila Palma:  A new mural celebrating the history, heritage and contributions of Belize’s East Indian community was unveiled on August 14 at the Punta Gorda Market and Plaza.

The mural, titled “Remembering Our Past, Reviving Our Roots, and Embracing Our Future as Indians in Belize,” highlights an important chapter of Belize’s multicultural history.

Members of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR) joined the unveiling ceremony, which showcased the role of the East Indian community in Belize’s national development.

The mural serves as a public reminder of the country’s diverse cultural heritage and the traditions that continue to shape communities across Belize.

ISCR congratulated artist Jill Burgess for bringing the story to life through her artwork, describing the mural as a meaningful contribution to the cultural and artistic expression of Punta Gorda. The project was made possible through resources provided by St. Peter Claver’s College through the Belize Culture Fund.

The ceremony also brought together members and representatives of the East Indian Southern Chapter and coordinators of the Yellow Ginger Festival.
