Orange Walk man learns the hard way that drinking has consequences

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 24-year-old construction worker spent his Saturday night in an Orange Walk police cell and left with one of the less common charges on the books: found drunk.

According to the Belize Police Department, acting upon information on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m., police visited a shop in San Jose Village, where they noticed a man staggering. When approached and questioned for his name, officers reported a strong aroma of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech, continued staggering, and red eyes.

He was informed of the offence of found drunk, cautioned, detained, and escorted to the station, where he was identified as Javier Marin, a 24-year-old construction worker of San Luis Village, Orange Walk District. Notably, no acknowledgement form was issued to him that night, as he was under the influence of alcohol and in no state to properly receive his rights.

That step waited for sobriety. On Sunday, August 2, an officer checking the Orange Walk Police Station cell block found Marin in a sober state of mind. He was then reinformed of the offence, cautioned again, read and explained his constitutional rights, and given the acknowledgement form, which he signed voluntarily.

That same day, police formally arrested and charged Marin with the offence of found drunk. Cautioned after the charge, he chose to remain silent.
