By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have indicated that an inmate who reportedly attempted to take his own life while in custody has since died, though police say further details on the case are still being gathered.
The matter arose during Friday afternoon’s police press briefing when reporters sought an update on the condition of the inmate.
Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith indicated that her understanding was that the inmate had died, but said she had not yet received a complete briefing on the investigation.
Smith also indicated that a post-mortem examination was expected and said police hope to provide additional information on the matter by Monday.
Reporters raised concerns about the circumstances because the deceased was in the custody of the state at the time of the incident, placing a duty of care on the institution responsible for him.
Police did not provide the inmate’s identity, the facility where the incident occurred, or further details surrounding the apparent suicide attempt during Friday’s briefing.
The investigation remains ongoing.
