By Zoila Palma: When you visit restaurants in Belize today, tipping is no longer optional.
If you check your dining receipts, you might notice that an extra charge is already automatically added to your bill.
Carlo Segura like many other Belizeans believe that tipping should still be optional.
“I have always believed that tipping is optional. Tips should be earned through good service, not expected or forced onto customers. Yes, it’s great for staff to make tips, but not everyone can afford to leave extra, and that choice should always remain with the customer.
We have never added a surcharge — not even for large groups. We leave tipping entirely up to the guest because we believe gratuity should reflect the experience and level of service received,” Segura said.
In addition, Segura added that many restaurants and bars disguise service charges.
“More than once, I’ve gotten home and realized that between the surcharge and the tip I added, I ended up paying nearly 40% extra. To me, that feels dishonest. Customers should be clearly informed upfront when a service charge is being added so they can decide for themselves whether they want to leave anything additional,” he added.
Many diners also believe that transparency and personal choice should remain central to the tipping experience.
