Jason Whitlock Blasts WNBA Draft Pick of Azzi Fudd Over Paige Bueckers Romance

*Sports commentator Jason Whitlock is challenging the Dallas Wings and the WNBA after the team used the top selection in Monday’s draft on Azzi Fudd, suggesting the choice was driven by her romance with fellow draftee Paige Bueckers rather than pure basketball merit.

Whitlock aired his grievances on his “Fearless” podcast the day after the draft, accusing the league of repeatedly centering same-sex relationships in its storytelling. “There’s nothing the WNBA loves more than a same-sex love story,” he said, per SandraRose.com, invoking veteran WNBA couple Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner to reinforce his point about what he called the league’s broader agenda.

Whitlock insisted stronger candidates were bypassed in favor of Fudd. “How did Lauren Betts not go No. 1? Because the WNBA loves same-sex couples stories and they’re electing Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd to be the first couple of the WNBA. Fudd and Bueckers, former UConn teammates who captured an NCAA National Championship together, are now reunited on the Wings roster. Their relationship, however, became a flashpoint at Fudd’s introductory press conference when a reporter attempted to ask about Bueckers’ 2025 TikTok post publicly confirming the pair as a couple. The Wings publicist intervened before Fudd could respond. “I understand why you have to ask that question, but we’re gonna respectfully decline from commenting on our players’ personal lives,” the publicist stated.

The handling of the question caught the attention of former Sports Illustrated writer Jeff Pearlman, who weighed in via TikTok. “Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers are in a long-term relationship, and nobody’s mentioning it. And the WNBA clearly has asked people not to mention it. And it’s very journalistically confusing to me,” he said, per SandraRose.com.
