UWP Deputy Political Leader Dominic Fedee is questioning the Government’s handling of fuel prices, arguing that Saint Lucians continued paying elevated prices at the pump even as global oil prices declined significantly from record highs reached in 2022.

Fedee’s comments come on the heels of a sharp 75-cent increase in fuel prices, a move likely to drive up transportation, food and business costs at a time when many Saint Lucians are already struggling with the rising cost of living.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Fedee challenged the Government’s claims that it has been shielding consumers through fuel subsidies, pointing instead to figures contained in the Government’s own Economic and Social Reviews which, he argues, show that petroleum excise revenues increased while fuel prices remained largely unchanged despite falling international oil prices.

According to Fedee, global crude oil prices peaked at approximately US$128 per barrel in March 2022 when Saint Lucians paid as much as EC$17.95 per gallon for gasoline and diesel. However, he noted that crude oil prices subsequently fell to average approximately US$83 per barrel in 2023, US$81 per barrel in 2024 and US$69 per barrel in 2025.

Despite those declines, Fedee argued that local fuel prices remained within the EC$16.00 to EC$16.50 per gallon range, raising questions about how the fuel pass-through pricing mechanism was applied.

“The question Saint Lucians must now ask is simple: Is the Government being fully honest with the people?” Fedee said.
