The Saint Lucia Fire Service was busy over the Labour Day weekend, responding to 100 emergency calls between 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1 and 9:00 a.m. Monday, May 4.
Serious emergencies included two alleged chopping attacks and a motor vehicle accident in Dennery involving a child.
On Friday afternoon, emergency personnel responded to a trauma incident in Micoud after a man walked into a fire station reporting he had been assaulted with a cutlass. Fire officers found a deep laceration on his hand and an avulsion injury to his thumb. He was treated on scene before being transported to a medical facility for advanced care.
On Saturday evening, officers responded to a motor vehicle incident in Pascal, Dennery, where a vehicle reportedly veered off the road and over a cliff. Emergency personnel found an adult male and a child standing at the roadside. The adult said the child had been the only person in the vehicle during the incident. An assessment revealed no visible injuries. The child was treated and taken to a medical facility for further evaluation.
Early Monday, fire officers responded to a serious trauma incident in Massade, Gros Islet, where a man was reportedly assaulted by a known assailant armed with a cutlass. Emergency personnel found him at home in the care of relatives. He sustained multiple lacerations and abrasions and was treated before being transported for further medical attention.
The 100 calls over the long weekend highlight the wide-ranging role of the Saint Lucia Fire Service. These figures were reported on International Firefighters’ Day, observed on May 4, which recognises the courage, sacrifice and service of firefighters and emergency responders who protect lives and communities.
