Andi Bauer aka aDUBta has spent close to 20 years behind the drums in different reggae bands. But a few years ago, he locked fully into that classic Jamaican sound from the ’60s through the early ’80s. You could really hear that focus on his 2023 debut Sounds From The Attic on Oneness Records, where he built roots reggae riddims for names like Earl Sixteen, Ranking Joe, Cedric Myton, Var, and Brother Culture. That project set the foundation.
From there, things kept moving. Together with Mauricio-Joran Ceseña from The Black Oak Roots Allstars, aDUBta kept crafting riddims. Around that same time, Marcus I linked up with him in Germany. They wrote, recorded, built harmonies, and that chemistry turned into a steady run of releases, leading right to this album.
What you get on Fullness is Marcus I in his element. His voice has character, his songwriting feels honest, and the delivery sits perfectly on the riddims that take you straight back to reggae’s golden era. Yes, the sound leans heavily into that old-skool roots vibe, but it never feels forced. It actually works to near perfection for Marcus I.
Musically, it’s all there. Steady basslines, crisp drum patterns, bright guitar chops, and just the right touch of horns. Everything sounds warm and alive. Lyrically, Marcus I keeps it grounded, touching themes like gratitude, love, freedom, and everyday life. Nothing overcomplicated, just real thoughts you can connect with.
Twelve tracks here, and the quality stays consistent. Upful kicks things off with a bright, uplifting feel that instantly brings Israel Vibration to mind. Throughout the album, you’ll also hear echoes of groups like Culture and the Mighty Diamonds, especially in the harmonies. And knowing Marcus I handled those himself makes it even more impressive. Tracks like Mr. Bossman, Youthman, and Open The Gate stand out early on, but make sure you also spend time with Island, Upstream, and Untold Story. Those tunes really sink in after a few listens.
All in all, Fullness is a strong debut set. If you’re into that classic roots reggae sound, this is one you don’t want to miss.
