On May 16, 2026, Egypt and Eritrea entered into an agreement to launch a new shipping line connecting their Red Sea ports. During a visit by Egypt’s Foreign and Transport Ministers to Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, both parties finalized the agreement.
The main objective of this shipping route is to improve logistics and trade by taking advantage of their respective coastlines on the Red Sea.
Included in the agreement is Egypt's commitment to sharing its railway and modernized port-building expertise to enhance economic growth in the region.
The delegation that visited Eritrea included Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir, who traveled under the direction of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
As the two parties signed the deals, private business owners from Egypt accompanying the delegation also explored ways to launch new projects with Eritrea.
Red Sea Security and Historical Ties
Regarding security, Abdelatty stated plainly that each country bordering the Red Sea is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring security along its shores. He added that outside countries should not be involved in these security arrangements.
The Egyptian government also used the opportunity to reaffirm that it stands solidly behind the sovereignty of Eritrea, while encouraging all nations along the Horn of Africa to ensure regional stability.
The Eritrean president commended Egypt and applauded the long-lasting relationship between the two nations. He also expressed his nation's willingness to coordinate political and economic decisions that will benefit both countries.
This cordial relationship between the two countries is built on a foundation that has existed for several decades. It began when the Egyptian government supported the Eritrean liberation movement during its struggle for independence.
Over the years, this history has paved the way for a mutually beneficial partnership aimed at strengthening economic capabilities and providing improved security across the Horn of Africa.
