Somalia’s Southwest state says Turkish drones aid federal govt offensive toward Baidoa

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in Somalia’s Southwest State on Sunday accused Turkey of directly supporting federal government forces in their push toward the strategic town of Baidoa, a move aimed at unseating regional President Abdiasis Laftagaren, who was re-elected in a controversial vote Saturday.

Officials said Turkish drones are providing aerial protection for Somali government troops, who have advanced to within 22 kilometers of Baidoa, signaling a direct foreign role in the country’s protracted civil conflict.
Once viewed as a close ally to the Somali people, Turkey is now being portrayed as intervening in an internal power struggle, actively aiding operations perceived to undermine a federal member state, officials said. Authorities further alleged that drone strikes have caused civilian casualties, though these claims have not been independently verified.

The accusations come amid reports from local media that Al-Shabaab insurgents ambushed Somali army units along the road linking Baidoa and Burhakabo. These attacks reportedly forced government forces to withdraw from Daynuunay and nearby areas, located roughly 22 kilometers from Baidoa, highlighting the precarious balance of power on the ground.

The Somali Ministry of Defense asserted that its troops had killed a number of militants and seized control of Daynuunay, though no evidence was provided. Local media accounts, however, suggest government forces may have been compelled to retreat under insurgent pressure.

This unfolding situation underscores the complex dynamics of Somalia’s ongoing civil war, where foreign involvement, insurgent resilience, and contested political authority intersect, threatening both stability and civilian safety in the country.
