There is a moment during every exceptional journey when the outside world begins to recede. The unanswered messages become less urgent. Time loosens its grip. You stop considering what comes next and begin, finally, to inhabit where you are.
At ÀNI Dominican Republic, that moment arrived almost immediately.
From the airport, our passage unfolded with the sort of seamless choreography that defines true luxury. A VIP welcome expedited the formalities, and private transportation waited to carry us toward the Dominican Republic’s north coast. There were refreshments, homemade snacks, Wi-Fi and chargers at hand—not grand gestures in themselves, perhaps, but precisely the thoughtful details that remove every possible wrinkle from an arrival. By the time we reached ÀNI, the journey no longer felt like transit. It had become the opening chapter of the experience.
And then the gates opened.
The staff stood waiting, not with the polished detachment one sometimes encounters at rarefied resorts, but with warmth that felt both celebratory and deeply personal. Within minutes, bags had disappeared toward our suites, refreshments had appeared, introductions were made and the contours of the estate began to reveal themselves.
There are villas designed to impress upon entry. ÀNI is designed to continue impressing long after the initial gasp.
A PRIVATE PENINSULA OF ONE’S OWN
Set on 4.2 acres of manicured tropical grounds, ÀNI Dominican Republic occupies its own peninsula along the country’s Amber Riviera. The Atlantic Ocean surrounds the estate in a magnificent sweep, offering 270-degree views and two naturally formed coves on either side. To the east lies La Piscina Natural, a strikingly photogenic natural swimming pool. To the west, El Hoyo Bay is framed by sculptural rock formations and dramatic blowholes. The coastline appears almost hand-drawn, scalloped and jeweled, with the resort poised above it like a secret known only to those fortunate enough to be invited inside.
The setting is undeniably cinematic. Palm fronds move in the breeze. The ocean alternates between cobalt drama and silvery calm. Stone pathways thread through gardens toward sun terraces, villas, pools and pavilions, while the distant mountains provide a lush green counterpoint to the endless blue.
Yet the defining quality of ÀNI is not merely where it is. It is the extraordinary privilege of having it entirely to oneself.
ÀNI pioneered the private-resort concept: each estate is reserved exclusively for one group at a time. There are no unfamiliar guests competing for the best table, no strangers drifting into the pool and no need to adapt one’s day to the rhythms of a conventional hotel. The resort becomes, for the duration of the stay, your own private realm.
ÀNI Dominican Republic accommodates as many as 28 guests across Villa Larimar and Villa Amber. The accommodations include ocean-view, bay-view and garden-view suites, positioned along a palm-lined central avenue. Villa Larimar greets the sunrise, while Villa Amber faces west toward the softened gold of evening. Both overlook expansive infinity pools and offer generous indoor and outdoor spaces for dining, gathering and entertainment.
The scale is substantial, but never overwhelming. Each suite feels secluded, with contemporary architecture that allows the landscape to remain the star. Timber, stone, soaring ceilings and enormous openings blur the distinction between indoors and out. From bed, terrace or bath, the ocean is never far from view.
But beautiful rooms are expected at this level. What distinguishes ÀNI is the almost anticipatory nature of the service surrounding them.
THE ART OF BEING LOOKED AFTER
The staff were on hand at every turn, yet never intrusive. A glass was refreshed before one thought to ask. Towels appeared beside the pool. A cool face mist arrived just as the midday heat began to settle. Fresh coconuts were opened, snacks were offered and arrangements seemed to materialize without visible effort.
There was always someone nearby who knew what we might need, but the experience never felt managed. Instead, the resort seemed to breathe around us.
Unpacking and packing services were available. Meals could be adapted to appetite and preference. Activities could be embraced enthusiastically or ignored entirely. The rarest commodity on the property was not champagne, infinity pools or square footage. It was freedom from decision fatigue.
This is the difference between expensive hospitality and truly luxurious hospitality. The former surrounds you with beautiful things. The latter releases you from responsibility.
At ÀNI, every member of staff contributed to that feeling. The service was beyond reproach, but it was also sincere. There were smiles that reached the eyes, conversations that lingered and a generosity of spirit that could not have been scripted. Over the course of our stay, the team ceased to feel like attendants operating at the edges of the experience. They became part of its heart.
Founder Tim Reynolds has described ÀNI’s guiding principle as togetherness: creating a place where families and friends can reconnect, free from stress because every detail has been taken care of. That philosophy is evident not as a corporate statement, but as a lived experience throughout the resort.
DAYS WRITTEN IN SUNLIGHT
Our first evening began with a cigar-rolling and rum-tasting masterclass as the sun descended toward the Atlantic. It was a fitting introduction to the Dominican Republic: tactile, aromatic and convivial. Premium rums were explored alongside cocktails and canapés, while the ritual of cigar making unfolded in practiced hands.
Dinner followed, the first of a series of culinary experiences that ensured no two meals felt remotely alike. ÀNI’s approach to dining is not simply to feed its guests exceptionally well, but to use each table as a setting for discovery. Locations shifted. Themes changed. Menus became narratives.
One evening celebrated salt and amber. Another explored the flavors of Dominican hospitality. Cocktails and seasonal canapés accompanied a guided Mama Juana tasting, bringing together rum, wine, honey, herbs, bark and tradition in a drink as layered as the country itself. Later, a film played beneath the stars.
Breakfasts unfolded leisurely at Villa Larimar, the morning stretching without urgency. There was no jostling around a buffet or calculating the final seating time. Coffee arrived as desired. Tropical fruit seemed brighter here. The ocean breeze moved through the open spaces while the estate awakened quietly around us.
For those inclined toward activity, the possibilities were abundant. One morning began with a bicycle ride along the road to Río San Juan. There was kayaking, paddleboarding, tennis, pickleball, waterslides and shuffleboard. The ocean invited exploration, while the infinity pools offered the more languid pleasure of remaining exactly where one was.
I found ÀNI particularly adept at creating balance. A day might begin with movement, continue with a massage and end with cocktails overlooking the sea. There was no forced pursuit of wellness and no pressure to remain industriously occupied. Activity and indolence existed side by side, both treated as equally worthy uses of time.
La Piscina Natural became one of the estate’s most memorable pleasures. Enclosed by rock and filled by the sea, it felt less like a resort amenity than a private gift from the landscape. To swim there was to feel momentarily suspended between architecture and nature, with the cliffs, water and sky composing the view.
THE SOUL BEYOND THE ESTATE
ÀNI’s beauty could easily have become the entire story. Yet one of the most meaningful experiences took us beyond the resort to the ÀNI Art Academies Dominican Republic.
The academies are part of the larger philosophy behind ÀNI Private Resorts. Established as a nonprofit organization and supported by resort profits, they provide intensive fine-art education to local students. The relationship between hospitality and philanthropy is not presented as a decorative footnote. It is central to the company’s purpose.
Meeting the student artists and seeing their work added an unexpected emotional dimension to the stay. Here was evidence that the idea of a journey—the meaning embedded in the ÀNI name—extends well beyond the guests arriving at the gates. It also refers to the future being shaped for talented young people within the surrounding community.
In an era when the word “meaningful” is applied rather freely to luxury travel, this felt genuine.
A BEACH, TRANSFORMED
On our final full day, the ÀNI team transformed Los Guardias Beach into a private seaside haven.
This was not merely a scattering of loungers and umbrellas. It was an elegantly orchestrated beach experience, with kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling equipment ready for use, massages offered beside the water, and a barbecue banquet served steps from the sea. Even the smallest details were anticipated: a sunglasses valet appeared as we reclined on the beach, whisking away glasses marked by sunscreen, sand and perspiration, then returning them moments later in pristine condition.
The pleasure lay in the completeness of it. Everything had been transported, arranged and anticipated so that we could simply arrive. Linen moved in the breeze. Glassware caught the sunlight. The ocean provided its own soundtrack.
Luxury is often associated with excess, but ÀNI understands the seduction of effortlessness. The beach was beautiful before we arrived. What the team added was the feeling that it existed, for those few hours, only for us.
That evening, Dominican culture took center stage with a folklore performance full of rhythm, color and infectious energy. It was followed by a farewell dinner in the event pavilion, a many-course celebration created to leave what the itinerary aptly described as “lasting echoes of the island.” Afterward came karaoke—a reminder that even the most exquisitely executed luxury need not take itself too seriously.
This may be ÀNI’s greatest triumph. The resort is immaculate, but never stiff. The service is precise, but never cold. The experience is decadent, yet filled with moments of laughter, spontaneity and human connection.
THE LUXURY THAT LINGERS
On departure morning, the mood shifted almost imperceptibly. Breakfast lasted a little longer. The view seemed to demand one more photograph. There was time for a final swim, another treatment or a quiet hour beside the infinity pool.
Packing services and private transfers ensured that leaving was as effortless as arriving. Takeaway food and refreshments could be prepared for the journey, with every final detail managed by the team.
But ÀNI had already made departure difficult in the only way that matters: it had made us feel at home.
The epitome of a true luxury vacation is not a thread count, a wine list or a dazzling infinity pool, though ÀNI delivers all the expected elements beautifully. It is the feeling of being completely cared for without being conscious of the machinery behind that care. It is having space to reconnect with the people around you—and perhaps with a version of yourself too often obscured by schedules and obligations.
At ÀNI Dominican Republic, privacy becomes intimacy. Service becomes friendship. A spectacular estate becomes the setting for something more enduring than a holiday.
You leave remembering the ocean and the food, the architecture and the views. But most of all, you remember the people who anticipated every need, transformed each day and made an extraordinary place feel entirely your own.
And long after the gates close behind you, a small part of you remains there—somewhere between Villa Larimar and Villa Amber, beneath the palms, listening to the Atlantic and wondering when the journey ahead will bring you back.
