A$AP Rocky Says Kanye West “Deaded” His Working Relationship With Virgil Abloh
A$AP Rocky revealed that his close relationship with Virgil Abloh faded because of Kanye West's interfering.

When it comes to modern fashion and Hip-Hop history, two of the most important figures are designer Virgil Abloh and self-described ‘Fashion Killa’ A$AP Rocky.
In fact, the two actually worked together, but in a new, nearly two-hour interview with Jason Lee, he explained why, despite being early fans of each other on the cusp of respective stardom, their relationship went cold because of Kanye West.
“I’m used to chilling with Virgil and them in Harlem like, you know, skateboarding, all that sh-t,” Rocky said. “That’s what they did. Virgil and them learned to DJ in ASAP Lou’s house. That’s where Been Trill was invented. He had a DJ collective named Been Trill. So, long story short, right? ASAP [Mob] and them was heavy with Virgil and them until Kanye deaded that sh-t when he started seeing Virgil did my album cover for free, did my tour, creative—all that for free.”
The album cover in question is 2013’s Long.Live.ASAP, for which Abloh is also credited as a creative director. One of the album’s singles, ‘Fashion Killa,’ was also the first music video he ever directed.
From the beginnings of their careers, Abloh and Ye, both Chicago natives, were linked, and Abloh later served as the creative director for DONDA.
He was heavily responsible for Ye’s tour aesthetic and covers for some of his most memorable works like 808s & Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch the Throne, and Yeezus.
So it appears Ye wanted to keep all of Abloh’s creativity in-house, which led to his severed relationship with Rocky.
Lee goes on to repeatedly ask Rocky if he thinks Ye was “jealous,” but refusing to stoke the flames, he just responded that “he’s my man.”
“He deaded it,” he continued. “Deaded it. He was like, ‘It’s quiet.’ We still was hanging, but all that them n-ggas being with n-ggas every other day, it was quiet.”
It wouldn’t be the first alleged instance that Ye was disgruntled by Abloh’s success. After Abloh passed in 2021 from cancer, Ye admitted that when he was appointed as Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director, he felt “a lot of pain and jealousy.”
Drake even alluded to the rift on 2018’s ‘Duppy Freestyle’ when he rapped, “I could never have a Virgil in my circle and hold him back because he makes me nervous…”
