Belize Bus Association says services continue; gives cabinet more time to act on diesel prices

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize Bus Association (BBA) has confirmed that bus operators will continue providing public transportation services today Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after members agreed to make an additional sacrifice to avoid an immediate disruption.

The BBA said the decision follows ongoing concerns over the rising cost of diesel and the expiration of the government’s subsidy.

“The Belize Bus Association (BBA) informs commuters and the general public that its members have agreed to make an additional sacrifice to continue providing bus services, Tuesday, August 25, 2026,” the association stated.

The BBA said that it formally raised the issue of the “unsustainable cost of diesel” with the Minister of Transport on July 15, well ahead of the subsidy’s expiry.

The association said this was done “in a genuine effort to allow sufficient time for Government to address the matter and avoid a disruption to public transportation.”

The latest development comes after the Minister of Transport requested additional time to prepare and table a Cabinet paper on the matter for consideration on September 1.

“Our members have unanimously agreed to make this additional sacrifice in the interest of the thousands of Belizeans who depend upon public transportation every day,” the BBA said.

The BBA said it hopes that cabinet recognizes the urgency of the issue.
