South Africa’s boys claimed bronze while the girls finished fourth after a competitive week of junior tennis in Egypt.

Cairo, Egypt (14 May 2026) – While South Africa’s wheelchair tennis stars were battling it out at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup European Qualification event in Italy, another group of rising talents was quietly making waves in Egypt.

Team South Africa’s young tennis stars are heading home from Cairo after a week packed with tight battles, big wins and a podium finish at the Under-14 African Junior Teams’ Competition.

The South African boys’ side wrapped up the tournament in style by beating Tunisia 3-0 in the bronze medal play-off on Saturday to secure third place overall.

It was a fitting finish to a strong campaign that started with a dominant clean sweep over Cameroon, where the boys did not drop a single set. They later pushed both Morocco and Egypt in closely contested ties before bouncing back to finish on a high. The girls’ team also ended their tournament with momentum, edging Botswana 2-1 in their final tie to claim fourth place overall.

Across the week, the South Africans produced several standout performances, including an impressive victory over Egypt as well as a commanding 3-0 win against Kenya.

Even in the tighter losses against Tunisia and Morocco, the girls remained competitive throughout and showed plenty of fight against some of the continent’s top junior teams.

The tournament, held in Cairo, Egypt, also served as a qualifying event for the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals, giving some of Africa’s brightest young talents the opportunity to test themselves on a major stage.

By the end of the week, South Africa’s youngsters had delivered exactly the kind of performances that continue to highlight the country’s exciting pipeline of junior tennis talent.
