E Cape law enforcement to intensify operations ahead of long weekends
Operations will focus on major routes linking economic hubs and minor roads.
The Eastern Cape Transport Department says law enforcement operations will be intensified across the province as traffic volumes are expected to increase significantly over the coming two consecutive long weekends.
Provincial Transport Department Spokesperson Unathi Binqose says operations will focus on major routes linking economic hubs and minor roads.
The province recorded over 20 road fatalities during the Easter period, with three major crashes occurring on Good Friday and another one that killed seven people on Easter Sunday in Gqeberha.
Binqose says drunk driving, reckless behaviour, and pedestrian safety will be key focus areas.
“We expect the volume of traffic to start increasing significantly starting from Friday as we are facing an unusually busy period on our roads with two long weekends effectively in one week. Many people are likely to take leave in between effectively extending travel across the entire week, coupled with month end pressures. This increases the risk of drunk driving and puts pedestrians at even greater danger. We are calling on motorists to act responsibly and all road users to work with law enforcement to prevent further loss of life.”
