Electricity fuel surcharge drops again amid ongoing government relief measures

Anguilla’s electricity fuel surcharge has fallen by over 10% as the government continues to subsidise a portion of the cost for residents and businesses.

It has dropped from EC$0.97 to $0.85 per kilowatt hour and will be reflected on bills issued by ANGLEC in the first week of August for power consumed during July.

Meanwhile, the surcharge remains capped at $0.42 per kWh for domestic and other customers, and $0.65 for hotels and villas, under the government’s relief measures, until the end of August.

The latest reduction will lower the amount of public funds required for the programme.

In a press release on 4 August announcing the surcharge reduction, ANGLEC said it continues to monitor global fuel market conditions as prices remain subject to change.

“We encourage all customers to continue practicing energy conservation and efficiency measures to help reduce electricity consumption and manage their monthly electricity costs,” the power company added.

The government first announced a package of relief measures on 30 March when geopolitical tensions contributed to rising fuel costs globally.

Fuel import relief – a suspension of import duties, customs service fees and additional charges – was initially set to run for three months, and electricity fuel surcharge assistance for two.

At the time, Premier Cora Richardson Hodge said: “Your government has been actively monitoring the situation and has taken decisive action to cushion the impact on our people and on our economy.”

Fuel surcharge more than doubled from $0.42 to $0.88 per kilowatt-hour on 1 April, then ANGLEC announced a second sharp increase from $0.88 to $1.04 per kilowatt-hour on 29 May.

The government paid $3.3m to ANGLEC for April electricity usage and $5.4m for May – together totalling $8.7m in public funds.

The relief was then extended into a third consecutive month as the power company announced a small reduction of the fuel surcharge to $0.97 per kWh – that would be backdated to 4 June.

In July, the premier announced a second extension of the electricity fuel surcharge assistance into August and the fuel import relief into early October.

The Anguilla Electricity Company (ANGLEC) is a publicly traded company in which the government controls the majority of the shares.
