FEDERAL Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree told the media on Thursday that there are “certainly issues around safety and security of Canadians that we continue to engage in” with India.
He said that while there is still a lot more work to do, the government “will do that work,” CBC reported.
Anandasangaree said: “We have certainly had irritations over the number of years, and they will be addressed through our channels relating to security.”
He added: “Matters that are before the courts will continue to be litigated through the courts and resolution will be addressed through the court and not through political means.”
He said that while ensuring Canada has an economic engagement that the prime minister is leading, “we will also have, at times, difficult conversation around safety and security of Canadians.”
Meanwhile, Surrey-Newton MP Sukh Dhaliwal slammed the government official who told reporters on Wednesday that the government does not believe India is still meddling in this country.
Dhaliwal said: “I firmly denounce remarks by a government official downplaying India’s transnational repression. They contradict assessments from the NSIA, the RCMP, and CSIS. This matter must be addressed, and the individual’s conduct and suitability for their role must be reviewed.”
