What can a young Barbados cricketer learn in a week playing in Dominica? Plenty, if you ask head coach Sulieman Benn.
The former West Indies spin bowler will guide the Barbados “A” team through their paces over the next seven days as they play three matches against Dominica “A”.
The squad of 13 players is made up mostly of players under the age of 23. They will open the tour with a three-day match today at Benjamin Park. This will be followed by two T20 matches next Wednesday and Thursday at the same venue.
Speaking to the Saturday Sun at the airport yesterday, Benn said there would be opportunities to learn a lot about the game as the players continued in the developmental stage of their fledgling career. He urged his charges to seize the moment and soak up as much learning as they could on this brief sojourn to the Nature Isle.
“We have a very good group of players who I expect to do well. We have some players who are trying to break into the system . . . to strengthen their positions in the overall cricket system in our cricket. We had a strong couple weeks of very good training and they are ready to go to Dominica and learn as much as they can,” Benn said.
“Kudos to the BCA (Barbados Cricket Association) for identifying the talent and bringing them through. Tours like this one to Dominica will give them the exposure and opportunities to develop their game.”
The squad will be led by Nimar Bolden, the young middle-order batter and wicketkeeper who has led the national team at all age group levels with distinction. It also includes Shian Brathwaite, who was a member of the Barbados squad in the
recent bilateral first-class series in Jamaica; all-rounder Zion Brathwaite, who has played in regional whiteball competitions; as well as Joshua Dorne, the West Indies Under-19 captain.
All the members of the squad play at the Elite level in Barbados, the youngest being Justin Parris, the leg-spinner all-rounder who is having his first tour at senior level.
Some of the players who were part of the team which won the gold medal at the Bolivarian Games in Peru last December are expected to feature, with an eye on the Pan American Games in July 2027, which will serve as a qualification event for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
FULL SQUAD: Nimar Bolden (captain), Seth Agard, Shian Brathwaite, Zion Brathwaite, Zachary Carter, Edwin Currency-Barnett, Joshua Dorne, Jaden Edmund, Jaden Lorde, Tariq O’neale, Justin Parris, Nathan Sealy, and Rashawn Worrell.
