If the Enemy Can Attack the Mind, He Can Destroy the Heart
“I quit.”
“I’m not good enough.”
“I hate myself.”
“I want to die.”
“I am not loved.”
These are just a few of fthe silent battles and lies that the enemy uses to speak louder than our faith. The greatest battlefield we will ever face is the mind. The enemy knows that if he can plant seeds of disbelief, lies, fear, doubt, shame, or discouragement in our thoughts, he can slowly paralyze our confidence, peace, and faith. And once the mind is captured, the heart is next.
As my grandfather and pastor, Dr. Oscar J. Nelson Dowdell-Underwood, has taught me: “If the enemy can rewire your mind, it will eventually take root in your heart and cause your heart to become harden.”
The mind is the control center of our lives. Our decisions, beliefs, and behaviors flow from what we think and meditate on. That is why we must operate with the mind of Christ.
The Bible reminds us:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23
Guarding the heart starts with protecting the mind and allowing it to be renewed daily by GOD’S Word.
The enemy often attacks quietly. He whispers lies:
“I will never get out of this situation.”
“My faith in God is gone.”
“God has abandoned me.”
When we entertain these thoughts, they take root. Over time, they can harden our hearts, leading us away from GOD’S truth and promises, and opening a gateway for perpetual attacks from the enemy.
2 Corinthians 10: 5 states, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
Taking every thought captive means recognizing lies, rejecting them, and replacing them with GOD’S truth. It is not always easy, especially when thoughts grow from past hurt or trauma, but the Word of GOD reminds us: “All things are possible to him who believes.” — Mark 9:23 Even strongholds can be broken when we choose to believe GOD’S Word.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” — Romans 12:2
Three Ways to Protect Your Mind and Heart
- Be Watchful Over Your Thoughts
- Do not let negative or ungodly thoughts linger.
- “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” — Colossians 3:2
- Feed Your Mind with God’s Word
- Scripture strengthens your mental defenses and transforms your thinking.
- “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” — Psalm 119:105
- Pray for a Guarded Heart
- Ask GOD to protect your heart and mind with His peace.
- “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6-7
- Believe the Blood of Jesus and the Grace of God will destroy every stronghold
- Jesus’ blood paid the price, and His Grace can destroy for whatever stronghold we may face.
- “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
When we protect our minds by putting on the Mind of Christ, we protect our hearts. When our hearts are in alignment with GOD, our faith excels. And when our faith excels, the devil loses his power to keep us in bondage to our thoughts.
Prayer for Dealing with Demonic Thoughts
Heavenly Father,
I thank You that I am more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus. Today, I put on the full armor of GOD (Ephesians 6:11). I take authority over every demonic thought and lie of the enemy, and I bring them captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).
I declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). I resist the devil, and he must flee from me (James 4:7). Lord, renew my mind with Your Word and keep me in perfect peace as I set my mind on You (Romans 12:2; Isaiah 26:3).
I rest in Your promise that You have given me power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). By the blood of Jesus, I overcome the enemy (Revelation 12:11). Today, I walk in victory, freedom, and authority in Jesus’ Name.
Amen.
