At least 10 people have died in widespread flooding across Kenya as heavy rains continue to hit multiple regions and strain critical hydroelectric infrastructure.
Authorities said the situation has reached a critical stage, particularly in eastern areas, while closely monitoring the Seven Forks dam system along the Tana River amid fears of severe downstream flooding.
Widespread damage and disruption
Police reported that persistent rainfall has destroyed roads, bridges, and homes across several counties.
In Kwale and Kitui, bridges were washed away, isolating communities and disrupting transport. Landslides have also affected key routes in the Rift Valley.
In Nairobi, emergency teams assisted residents trapped in floodwaters in densely populated areas, forcing families to move to higher ground.
Pressure on dam system
The Seven Forks hydroelectric cascade is under increasing pressure due to rising inflows from upstream catchment areas.
KenGen said Masinga Dam is nearing full capacity, raising concerns about overflow risks.
Controlled water releases have been initiated to reduce pressure, but authorities warn of rising water levels downstream.
High alert downstream
Communities in low-lying areas including Garissa, Hola, and Garsen have been placed on high alert, with river levels expected to remain above flood thresholds.
Calls for urgent precautions
Authorities urged residents in flood-prone areas to relocate immediately and warned against crossing flooded roads or bridges.
Officials also advised the public to follow updates as further rainfall is expected, increasing the risk of additional flooding and displacement.
