Lady Ele Speaks for Vulnerable Youth
With May celebrated globally as Child Month, Lady Ele thought it appropriate to release a song dedicated to the young and vulnerable.
‘The Children’ is the title of the Swedish singer’s latest effort. The heartfelt track was originally written by Wilsam Yanis of Haiti, but re-written by Nathalia, a Colombian songwriter based in Los Angeles.
It is produced by Jamaican, Sean ”Young Pow” Diedrick.
Lady Ele, who has called Jamaica home for almost 10 years, says she is troubled by several issues that affect youth in need of guidance.
“The trafficking of children, the lack of education and therefore a chance to evolve and develop further mentally. When humans are left in a fight or flight mode, they rarely thrive but merely survive,” she noted.
The United Nations reports that exploitation of children for labour and sexual purposes are the most prevalent forms of child trafficking. That organisation points to North and Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Central America and the Caribbean as the major problem areas.
‘The Children’ is Lady Ele’s latest project with Diedrick, whose credits include songs by Damian Marley and Sean Paul. He co-produced ‘After 8’, her 2020 album, with Brian Kennedy of Rihanna and Chris Brown fame.
“I have been recording as much as possible (since moving to Jamaica). I released two singles ‘Smile With You’ (featuring Ken Boothe) and now ‘The Children’ and I’m doing performances around the island,” she disclosed. “I’ve also recorded a whole album named ‘VIRGO’ which will be my next release.”
Born to a Tunisian father and Swedish mother in Stockholm, Lady Ele recalls being raised in a diverse (Europeans, Africans, South Americans and West Indians) community, which shaped her music and outlook on life.
Moving to Los Angeles, she attended the Musicians Institute where she earned an associate degree in music. While living there, she was one of the harmony singers for Stevie Wonder’s 2007 ‘House Full of Toys Concert’.
In 2008, ‘She, Her, Ele’, her first album, was released. Five years later came the EP, ‘Coming From A Lady’, which landed a NAACP Image Award Nomination for Outstanding World Music Album. That category was won by Natalie Cole.
Lady Ele is scheduled to perform at the ‘Seeds Of Unity’ concert, scheduled for Drax Hall Sports Stadium in St. Ann parish, northeastern Jamaica, on May 16. That event has Sizzla and Turbulence among the headliners.
