By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Two separate investigations into missing government funds are now raising serious questions about financial oversight inside Belize’s security institutions, and so far no criminal charges have been brought in either case.
Police have confirmed that just over $20,000 has gone missing from the Crime Investigation Branch of the Belize Police Department. The money was not operational funds. It was seized money, cash taken as part of a criminal investigation dating back to 2023, and it was discovered missing earlier this year during an internal audit of the CIB.
As a consequence of the missing funds, the Officer Commanding the CIB has been transferred. ASP Stacy Smith confirmed that the Professional Standards Branch is now reviewing the matter and that statements have been recorded as the investigation continues.
“As it relates to the auditing that was done at the CIB, a discovery was made that some sums of money was unaccounted for and that is the matter of an ongoing investigation,” ASP Smith stated.
But the missing money does not stop there.
A separate investigation is underway into allegations that well over $160,000 is missing from the Immigration Department in Belize City. That case involves missing funds, missing documents and missing nationality documents. Police say arrangements are being made to record thorough and comprehensive statements in connection with that report, but as of now nothing formal has been recorded.
When a reporter pressed ASP Smith on whether any statement had yet been taken in the immigration case, her response was direct.
“So nothing has been recorded,” the reporter noted.
“They have informed us of certain things. However, a thorough statement needs to be recorded with particular and specific information,” ASP Smith replied.
Two institutions. Two investigations. A combined total of over $180,000 unaccounted for. And at this point, no charges have been laid in either case.
Belizeans are watching and waiting for answers.
