One of Africa’s most outlandish military leaders intends to succeed his father in Uganda’s highest seat

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces and son of the country’s current president, Yoweri Museveni, has once again relayed his intentions to run for president.

The Ugandan military chief disclosed via his X page that, with the blessing of his father, he would be participating in the 2031 presidential elections.

“I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God,” he tweeted, shortly after running a poll to see how many of his followers are in support of the idea.

Furthermore, he stated that his father, whom he typically addresses as Mzee, will direct his campaign and assist him in securing 90% of the vote.

Although General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has previously expressed an interest in succeeding his father as president, he has now established a specific timeline for his candidacy.

Speculations for his now stated presidential intentions heated up in 2024, when Yoweri Museveni appointed his son as the top military commander.

Should he be elected, he will succeed his father, President Museveni, who secured re-election in January at the age of 81 for a seventh term, thereby potentially extending his nearly forty-year tenure as head of state until 2031.

General Kainerugaba, known for his outlandish opinions, has attracted considerable public scrutiny, as he consistently uses his X platform to relay opinions that seem to border between absurd and offensive.

For context, in the last 24 hours, he has tweeted about how the global pop icon Beyoncé is now drawn to Ugandan men, and how his love for women will ensure that he can never be a priest.

The Ugandan general has a well-documented history of publicly sharing unfiltered commentary online, an approach uncharacteristic of high-ranking military and government officials.

From issuing severe threats to asserting that the Ugandan armed forces can rival technologically superior military powers, Muhoozi Kainerugaba frequently articulates his views without restraint.

Last year, Muhoozi Kainerugaba tweeted that he wants to behead the country's most renowned opposition leader, Bobi Wine.

He said that his father was the main reason the opposition leader was shielded from him.

Shortly after, he tweeted about how he would love to get in a boxing match with Bobi Wine, as killing him presented less of a challenge.
