The two-day event at Durban Undersea Club saw more  than 300 swimmers participating and raising over R1.5 million for 14 beneficiary charities.

Durban, South Africa (31 May 2026) – More than 300 swimmers took to the waters of Durban, but the real victory at the 2026 Oceans 8 Charity Swim went beyond the finish line.

Held at Durban Undersea Club on 23 and 24 May, this year’s edition of the charity-driven ocean event raised an impressive R1.5 million for causes across conservation, education, rehabilitation and community care.

And with donations still being processed until the end of May, organisers believe the final figure will climb even higher.

Since launching in 2023, the Oceans 8 Charity Swim has quickly grown into one of KwaZulu-Natal’s standout fundraising events, blending endurance swimming with meaningful impact. This year alone, participants collectively swam around 1,455 miles across the 1-mile, 4-mile, 8-mile and 16-mile races.

One of the biggest talking points from the weekend came from Gauteng swimmer Robert Tout, who raised an incredible R101,185 while completing the gruelling 8-mile challenge in support of the National Sea Rescue Institute.

According to event spokesperson Nicci Carvalho, the atmosphere throughout the weekend felt just as special as the fundraising itself.

“The conditions were incredible, with fish over the reef and lovely weather,” Carvalho said. “It felt like a celebration, not only of athletic achievement but of impact and the privilege of swimming in the ocean.”

There was a rise in participation in the 1-mile event, showing how the competition is becoming more accessible to swimmers wanting to support the different charities involved.

The event also continued its Oceans 8 Development Swimmers Programme, which gave five young swimmers and their coach, Janet Dlamini, an opportunity to experience the event firsthand.

Dlamini, who was inspired to pursue lifesaving after witnessing a rescue at the age of 16, now mentors young people at Zinkwazi Beach through swimming and lifesaving programmes. Her group included aspiring divers, future Navy recruits and emerging young lifeguards.

“The best experience ever!” Dlamini said. “The guys were excited, a bit tired, but happy and proud.”

Since its launch in 2023, Oceans 8 has continued to grow into far more than just a swimming event. With millions already raised for charity and more swimmers getting involved each year, the weekend once again proved how sport, community and purpose can come together to make a real difference.
