Exclusive: Today, WE ARE PARABLE release a full-length trailer for DREAMERS, the powerful debut feature by acclaimed UK filmmaker Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor.
The film has also excitingly been longlisted at this year’s British Independent Film Awards, for categories including the prestigious Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director and Best Debut Screenwriter.
Dreamers stars Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo (Been So Long, Rain Dogs) as Isio, a Nigerian migrant detained after living undocumented in the UK for two years. Isio is convinced that the only way out is to play by the rules, even when her charismatic new roommate, Farah (played by Ann Akinjirin), warns her otherwise. As the friendship between Isio and Faith evolves into something deeper whilst her faith wanes as her asylum pleas are rejected, she must choose between compliance and the risk of escape in pursuit of true freedom.
Following its premiere earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival where it was nominated for the coveted Teddy Award for Best Feature Film, Dreamers played at London Film Festival in The Sutherland Competition (for First Feature). Gharoro-Akpojotor’s feature also received its Irish Premiere at GAZE International LGBTQIA film festival in August, where it was awarded the GAZE Jury Award for Best Feature.
Produced by Emily Morgan at Quiddity, and financed by BBC Film, BFI, Newen Connect, Finite Films and OnSight, Dreamers is a poignant and timely story that explores the strength of queer love, identity and resistance within the confines of a UK immigration removal centre. We Are Parable acquired the film from The Yellow Affair by Studio TF1.
Gharoro-Akpojotor first gained widespread acclaim as the producer of Blue Story (2019), which went on to gross £4.5 million at the UK box office and became a cultural touchstone. Her producing credits also include Boxing Day (2021), the UK’s first all-Black Christmas film and the BBC series Champion (2023).
Dreamers is in cinemas in the UK & Ireland 5th December 2025.
