As passengers started falling sick aboard a Eurowings Aircraft, flying from Greece, people suspected a norovirus outbreak on the flight and the alarm triggered an emergency response in Germany.
An ordinary flight from a Greek holiday island turned into a medical emergency on Sunday, 18 October 2026, when multiple passengers reportedly became ill aboard a Eurowings Airline plane.
The flight EW9631 was traveling from the Greece Island of Rhodes (RHO) heading to Düsseldorf (DUS), in Germany.
Reports describe the Eurowings Aircraft as an Airbus A321 plane, undertaking route: Rhodes, Greece to Düsseldorf, Germany, carrying at least 212 passengers and seven crew members, according.
So, what exactly happened?
As several passengers experienced gastrointestinal symptoms, the flight crew requested priority landing at Düsseldorf so emergency medical teams could be ready on arrival.
Following the aircraft’s safe landing, a significant emergency response was mobilized, including ambulances, airport firefighters and medical personnel.
Authorities activated a precautionary mass-casualty alert while assessing the situation.
Medical personnel wearing protective suits subsequently boarded the aircraft to examine passengers.
Three affected passengers received medical attention and were taken to hospital as a precaution, according to reports.
Was it norovirus?
A possible norovirus outbreak was raised as an explanation for the reported symptoms.
However, norovirus has NOT been officially confirmed as the cause. Eurowings stated that the reason for the passengers’ illness remained unclear and was being investigated.
Why the protective suits?
Protective equipment can be used as a precaution when an infectious disease is suspected. Their presence does not, by itself, confirm a norovirus outbreak or a hazardous-materials incident.
The response highlights the importance of precautionary measures when multiple passengers become ill in the confined environment of an aircraft.
Aviation safety takeaway
When several passengers develop unexplained symptoms during a flight, the crew must communicate with air traffic control, coordinate medical assistance and ensure the aircraft can land safely.
On the ground, emergency services must be prepared to assess potentially infectious illnesses while protecting passengers, crew and responders.
The incident also demonstrates why clear communication and coordinated emergency planning are essential when the nature and scale of a medical emergency are initially uncertain.
STATUS: NOROVIRUS SUSPECTED — NOT CONFIRMED. The cause of the illness remained under investigation in the latest reports reviewed, published on 20–21 October 2026.
