For Ben Shelton, the World No. 9 who dispatched Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set quarterfinal that didn’t finish until 3:33 a.m. — the latest finish in US Open history — this final represented a shot at becoming the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title in 23 years, since Andy Roddick in 2003.
