Newly sworn-in Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere Nsubuga has been arrested over allegations of attempting to interfere with the process leading to the election of the speaker of parliament.

Nameere was arrested on Friday evening at Hotel Brovad in Masaka city while leading a celebratory convoy through the city following her swearing-in ceremony.

According to witnesses, the MP was intercepted by armed military personnel travelling in a Toyota Hiace van commonly referred to as a “drone,” which reportedly had concealed number plates.

Huzairuh Nsubuga, Nameere’s husband, who witnessed the arrest, said the armed men blocked their vehicle before forcefully dragging the legislator into the waiting van.

He further alleged that the soldiers subdued Nameere’s police guard bodyguard (PGB) escort before taking her away without immediately disclosing the reason for the arrest.

According to Nsubuga, the security personnel also confiscated some of the MP’s belongings from the vehicle, although he declined to reveal the specific items that were taken.

“They created dramatic scenes, scared away all the supporters who were part of the convoy and forced us to open the vehicle, only for men to grab her and drive off to an unknown destination,” he said.

Nameere’s arrest came shortly after a heated exchange on social media between her and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) secretary general David Kabanda over the group’s decision to withdraw support for the re-election of speaker Anita Among.

Kabanda, who is also the MP for Kasambya county in Mubende district, stated that the PLU leadership headed by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba had distanced itself from Among over allegations of abuse of public funds.

However, the statement reportedly angered Nameere, who accused Kabanda of using the matter as a political blackmail tactic against the speaker.

Sources within political circles claim Nameere had continued mobilising MPs allied to PLU to disregard the statement and maintain support for Among’s bid for another term as speaker.

Kabanda has also accused Nameere of attempting to undermine support for PLU-backed speaker candidate Jackson Oboth Oboth by allegedly making threatening phone calls to MPs invited to his thanksgiving celebrations.

Security agencies had not yet issued an official statement regarding Nameere’s arrest by the time of filing this report.
