The Midlands community knitted to do their bit, creating warm blankets for hundreds in need!
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (18 May 2026) – Have you ever met a knitter who doesn’t do good things? Those two qualities almost always work in tandem.
Over the last few months, Piggly Wiggly Country Village and its network of knitters in the Midlands put dozens of hours into collecting wool and knitting blankets for charity and members of the community who need the warmth.
Every Wednesday at the Piggly Wiggly coffee shop, knitters would gather to create crochet blanket squares. Experienced and novice crochet and knitters alike joined in to create a force of kindness to knit for the needy. Some took the work home with them, creating even more warmth.
By the end of the initiative, a total of 318 blankets were made to donate!
The village hosted a Big Blanket Day on May 2nd, where the community was invited to come and admire the hard work and creations of everyone who knitted to do their bit. The event displayed dozens of blankets, hung all along the outside of the property and on trees, which created a colourful spectacle of good!
“A day to celebrate every single person who picked up a needle, chose a colour, and put love into every stitch this winter. Every blanket tells a story of kindness.” Piggly Wiggly shared.
The blankets will now bring warmth, comfort and hope to Midlanders who need it.
“What an amazing reminder of what can happen when people come together for a greater cause.”
