The National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Idah Nabayiga, has been declared the winner of the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election, securing a decisive victory over her closest rival.
Nabayiga was announced winner by Kalangala District Returning Officer Ronald Agaba after garnering 12,642 votes in the closely watched race.
Her main challenger, Irene Nampala of the National Unity Platform (NUP), came second with 7,474 votes, while other candidates trailed far behind. Sharifah Babirye polled 244 votes, Hellen Flavia Nagawa received 217 votes, and Agnes Nassuuna managed 34 votes.
The by-election was held following the death of former Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away in April at Alexandria Specialized Hospital along Yusuf Lule Road in Kampala. Reports indicate that Nakimuli had undergone what was initially described as a successful surgical operation before her condition deteriorated unexpectedly.
According to sources, the late legislator had driven herself to the hospital prior to the procedure, making her sudden death a shock to both constituents and political leaders.
Nabayiga’s victory ensures that the ruling NRM retains the Kalangala District Woman MP seat, reinforcing the party’s dominance in the island district.
The Electoral Commission is expected to formally gazette the results, paving the way for Nabayiga’s swearing-in as the new Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District.
