Education authorities in Lilongwe District have commended the Youth Empowerment through Sustainable Education project for supporting needy students in secondary schools and university with upkeep and essential learning materials.

During a presentation of learning materials on Saturday in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalolo, Chatsala Education Zone coordinator Alfred Kalinde commended Sunhawk Energy for the initiative, describing it as timely in addressing school dropouts and teen pregnancies.

Banda speaking during the event.

“I urge beneficiaries to work hard as a way of appreciating the support,” he said.

Kalinde said previously, Msundwe area in Lilongwe was associated with violence and high school dropout rates due to poverty.

“However, the project has changed people’s mindset and empowered young people through education,” he said.

Sunhawk Energy director of operations William Banda reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to helping students achieve their goals.

“We support girls and boys who cannot afford school fees in secondary and tertiary institutions. Since 2017, over 453 learners have benefitted from this programme,” he said.

Banda said the organisation is also implementing a Go Back to School programme to give teen mothers a second chance to attain education.

“We provide school fees, upkeep and learning materials so that learners can focus on their education without worrying about basic needs,” he said.

Senior Chief Kalolo also commended the initiative, saying many learners fail to pursue higher education due to a lack of resources.

One of the beneficiaries, Mphatso Joseph, a Form Four student at Dzenza Secondary School in Lilongwe, said the support has given him hope to continue with his education despite financial challenges.

Another beneficiary, Josephine Moses, who has been selected to pursue a bachelor of commerce (Taxation) at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences in Blantyre, expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

The project is running under Sunhawk Energy International in partnership with Centre for Concerned Youth in Development, We Are One and Child Legacy International.
