Assemblies of God Care and Tearfund have expressed satisfaction with the impact of a beekeeping initiative in conserving forests in Salima and Dedza districts.

Under the Scale Up Conserve Project, Assemblies of God Care with funds from Jersey Overseas Aid Commission through Tearfund is implementing Scaling Up Conservation of Endangered Natural Resources for Sustainable Economic Returns and Value Empowerment project in Salima District.

In his remarks on Thursday during a project coordination meeting in Traditional Authority Kambwiri in Salima, Assemblies of God Care executive director Alinune Mtafya urged community members to continue protecting Kachere Forest in Salima and Thuma Forest in Dedza.

“We are so far impressed with how community members are protecting forests through beekeeping. Bees scare people who go into forests to cut trees or poach protected wild animals,” he said.

Tearfund programmes manager Faith Tsungulo urged communities surrounding designated forests and wildlife reserves to participate in conservation efforts to safeguard the ecosystem that is essential to daily living.

“It is our collective duty to reverse the destruction of forests because forests help us in many ways,” she said.

Kachere Beekeeping Group member Eliza Mmanga from T/A Kambwiri said they have 22 colonised beehives.

She said: “Apiculture is helping us to conserve the environment. Besides, beekeeping has empowered us economically.

“For instance, last year we harvested 310 kilogrammes of honey and we sold it at K3 million.”

Other partners in this project are the Synod of Livingstonia Development Department, the Forestry Research Institute of Malawi, Malawi Plant Genetic Resource Centre and Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi.
