A Powerful Circle of Hope is Taking Place in Soweto this Mandela Day

This Mandela Day, Hamba Bamba Funda will join hands with Heartlines to honour Madiba through a powerful act of presence, connection and community – and you’re invited.

Soweto, South Africa (01 June 2026) – This Mandela Day, in the vibrant township of Soweto, Hamba Bamba Funda (HBF) and Heartlines (Fathers Matter) will join forces to host a deeply meaningful event that honours Madiba’s birthday through connection, dignity, and the power of present fatherhood.

On 18 July 2026, at Meadowlands Welfare Centre, the organisations will gather for Hands of Hope: 67 Fathers, 67 Babies, One Equal Tomorrow: a 67‑minute circle of presence, touch, and community that celebrates the small, human moments that shape a child’s future.

Attendees can expect a programme that is as entertaining as it is inspiring:

  • Heartlines will screen Playing Dad, a moving 20‑minute film about the joy and transformation found in father‑child play.
  • The Flower Foundation will guide fathers in a practical skills‑development session on planting vegetables using recycled 2‑litre Coke bottles, soil, and vegetable seeds – a simple, sustainable way to support family nutrition.
  • Hamba Bamba Funda will host a session on father‑child connection, strengthening emotional presence and early development.
  • Families will receive Jars of Hope and clothing for babies aged 0–2 years, supporting households where resources are limited.

“This day is about restoring dignity, nurturing bonds, and creating equal beginnings — one father, one child, one moment at a time,” says HBF Founding Director, Monja Boonzaier.

To make this day impactful, Monja and her team are warmly inviting corporate partners to support through contributions in the following areas:

  •  Jars of Hope ingredients: lentils, split peas, rice, stock cubes, stock powder, and empty glass jars
  •  Planting Session Supplies: empty 2‑litre Coke bottles, soil, and vegetable seeds
  •  Refreshments: 200 bottles of 500 ml water
  •  Film & Sound Support: sponsorship or provision of a quality sound system for the film screening
  •  Meal Support: soup and bread for participating fathers and children
  • Clothing Drive: second‑hand baby clothes (0–2 years)

“Your partnership will help us honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy of compassion, dignity, and equality – reminding us that ‘It is in your hands to make a difference’.”
