Avis Dam continues to evolve into a more secure, accessible, and environmentally conscious urban green space, thanks to a growing partnership between Greenspace Namibia, Gondwana Collection Namibia and PSG Wealth Namibia.
PROGRESS ON THE GROUND
Since the partnership was formalised last year, several key developments have been implemented. A new dam warden was appointed on 1 March to oversee day-to-day operations and conservation efforts. To support his role, he has been equipped with essential tools, including a vehicle and communication device, improving overall site management.
Additionally, the first phase of information panels has been installed in parking areas around the dam. These panels aim to educate visitors about the site’s ecological importance, encourage them to act responsibly and reinforce conservation messaging.
A VISION FOR GROWTH
THAT LASTS
This partnership is a tangible on-the-ground effort to preserve one of Windhoek’s most valued natural spaces.
The project follows a phased approach to ensure that development is consistent with and supports the protection of sensitive ecosystems and wildlife at Avis Dam. Its next phase will see a more extensive informational signage into the walking and cycling paths, while strengthening awareness around conservation.
Future plans include infrastructure development to provide support to both dam guards and the public, the introduction of community-centred events that inspire greater public engagement with the space, as well as safeguarding ecologically sensitive areas around the dam. This will ensure that the increased accessibility does not compromise environmental integrity
PARTNERSHIP IN ACTION
Beyond conservation, the initiative contributes to improved safety, promotes the dam’s identity as a recreational destination, and opens up future economic opportunities through sustainable tourism and community engagement.
With each phase, the project gets closer to its vision: a protected natural space where people and nature can exist together, where communities can connect and where future generations can keep enjoying one of Windhoek’s most cherished outdoor spaces.
