Belize City man fined $505 for almost 2 ounces of weed

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 38-year-old Belize City man was fined a total of $505 on after pleading guilty to possession of 56.9 grams of marijuana.

Niven Orin Anthony Flowers, a resident of Marigold Lane, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court last week, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of possession of a controlled drug.

Police say Flowers was found with 56.9 grams of marijuana, an amount significantly above the quantity permitted for personal possession but 3.1 grams below the 60-gram threshold referenced by authorities for the more serious drug-trafficking charge.

Flowers was fined $500 plus $5 cost of court and was given until January 29, 2027, to pay. In default of payment, he faces four months’ imprisonment.

During sentencing, the Magistrate reportedly reminded Flowers that the law permits possession of no more than 10 grams of marijuana under specified circumstances. The court also took into consideration that Flowers had a previous drug-related conviction and therefore could not be treated as a first-time offender.

According to police, officers conducted a search at a Marigold Lane property at about 6:45 a.m. Friday. During the search, officers allegedly found a green plastic bag containing suspected cannabis inside a double-door refrigerator located in the yard.

The substance was subsequently identified as marijuana, leading to Flowers being charged and brought before the court later that day.
