Brave the Cold to Support the NSRI This Winter Solstice

The winter solstice is happening on 21 June, and the NSRI is inviting you to brave the cold and take a dip in support of its life-saving mission.

South Africa (19 May 2026) – Day or night, all year round, the volunteers of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) are ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice – even on the coldest days.

As the winter solstice approaches on Sunday, 21 June, marking the longest night of the year, the NSRI encourages you to embrace the chill and celebrate the return of longer days with an invigorating plunge.

How? You may be asking yourself – by braving the cold and taking a dip for the NSRI’s cause, participating in a winter solstice plunge to raise vital funds.

“Join hundreds across South Africa in this tradition by taking a plunge in the sea, a tidal pool, a swimming pool, your local dam, or even by participating in an ice bucket challenge. Not only is this a test of endurance and bravery, but it may also provide health benefits, such as boosting your immune system, improving circulation, and reducing stress,” shares the NSRI’s Andrew Ingram.

Each year, teams of NSRI volunteers brave the plunge from their rescue bases to raise funds for their station. This year, the organisation is challenging the public to organise a Winter Solstice Plunge on or near 21 June.

“Regardless of size, every contribution helps the NSRI continue teaching water safety and survival swimming, as well as conducting rescue operations and saving lives.”
