Former Asante Kotoko midfielder and ex-Ghana international Yussif Chibsah has renewed the debate over domestic player representation in the national team, calling for a structured quota system to ensure consistent inclusion of Ghana Premier League talent in the Ghana national football team.
Chibsah argues that the current setup does not give enough opportunity to locally based players, warning that continued neglect could weaken both the national team pipeline and the domestic league itself.
“We cannot continue to ignore Ghana Premier League players,” he said. “There must be a quota system to ensure they are represented in the Black Stars.”
He stressed that the issue is not about lowering standards but about creating fair access and meaningful evaluation opportunities for home based talent.
“It’s about giving them opportunities to prove themselves. If you don’t provide the platform, how can we assess them at the highest level?” he added.
Chibsah further called for a more intentional development structure that links the domestic league directly to national team selection, arguing that such a system would raise competitiveness and improve overall quality.
“We need to create a pathway to improve both the players and our local league,” he said.
His comments add to a long standing discussion in Ghanaian football about balancing foreign based stars with locally developed talent, especially as the Black Stars continue to rely heavily on players competing abroad.
As debates around squad selection intensify, Chibsah’s proposal is likely to fuel further conversation about how best to align domestic football development with national team success.
