A DISPUTE between a domestic worker and Gray Homes Construction has spilled into the public arena after Letwin Chitemere accused the company of failing to deliver kitchen construction services despite receiving US$2,800 from her.
Chitemere posted a video on social media appealing for help from people across Zimbabwe, saying she had saved the money from her job as a housemaid to upgrade her parents’ home. She claimed Gray Homes took her payment for a kitchen installation project but never carried out the work.
“I paid them US$2,800, and they later asked for more. I agreed to pay in instalments to make it US$3 500 in total,” she said.
“They called me to their office twice in December, but they still could not pay back my money.”
Chitemere said the company later moved from the offices she knew, leaving her unable to trace them. Fighting back tears in the video, she said she had lost her only meaningful savings.
“I don’t have anything to my name. I don’t have money, I’m only a housemaid who was trying to do something for my parents, but I was conned,” she said.
“All I want is my US$2,800. Please help me locate the company and get my money back.”
In a statement, Gray Homes Construction disputed the allegations and said its interactions with the Chitemere family had been misrepresented. The company said the clients initially requested installation of kitchen cupboards at a property in Kariba, but later expected construction of an entire house for US$3,500, which the company argued was impossible.
“Upon further engagement and assessment, it became evident that the clients’ expectations were different from the initial request and extended to the construction of a full house within a budget of USD 3,500,” the company said.
“After professional evaluation, it was determined that such a project was not feasible within the proposed budget.”
The company said it provided a revised quotation reflecting the actual cost of the project and informed the clients that additional funding was required beyond the US$2,500 already paid.
According to the statement, the clients “indicated that they were unable to meet the required financial adjustments.”
Gray Homes also rejected claims of dishonesty.
“We find it concerning that misleading information has been shared publicly regarding this matter,” the company said.
“All engagements were conducted in good faith, with clear communication and professional guidance provided at every stage.”
The company added that it remains open to dialogue: “The management will engage the client as soon as possible and resolve this issue.”
