Cuba solidarity: Namibia campaigns against US blockade

Namibia has launched a national solidarity campaign backing Cuba, calling for an end of the United States’ longstanding blockade on the country while mobilising public and institutional support countrywide.

The US embargo against Cuba involves a set of laws and regulations restricting trade, financial transactions, and economic relations with Cuba.

National Assembly speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila spoke at the launch of the Namibia National Solidarity Campaign in support of the people of Cuba in Windhoek on Wednesday.

She said the initiative reflects the parliament’s united stance and Namibia’s enduring commitment to international cooperation.

“In Namibia, we are united across political parties. While we may disagree on many issues, when it comes to Cuba, we stand together,” she said, noting that the Friendship Association includes representatives from all political parties.

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila described the continued impact of blockading Cuba as a violation of international law and sovereignty, calling for its immediate removal.

Drawing on her experience growing up in exile, she highlighted Cuba’s historic support to Namibians and stressed the importance of solidarity.

The campaign will mobilise support through donations, partnerships and awareness efforts, reinforcing long-standing ties between the two countries.

The launch was attended by government officials, members of parliament, civil society, youth groups and members of the diplomatic corps.
