By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Concerns are growing over the cost of doing business in Belize following another increase in the price of diesel.
A social media post circulating this weekend highlighted that diesel has risen to $15.96 per gallon, describing the increase as another blow to the country’s business sector.
The higher price of diesel has implications beyond motorists filling their tanks.
Businesses that depend heavily on transportation, generators, construction equipment and delivery vehicles can face higher operating expenses when fuel prices rise. Those costs can eventually affect the prices consumers pay for goods and services.
The transportation sector is particularly exposed since buses, trucks, taxis, tour operators and other commercial vehicles depend on fuel to operate.
Businesses involved in agriculture and construction can also face additional pressure because diesel powers much of the heavy equipment used in those industries.
The latest increase comes amid growing public discussion over fuel and energy costs in Belize.
Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton also criticized the latest diesel increase this weekend, arguing that businesses and working families are being placed under increasing financial pressure.
The price of diesel has therefore become another focal point in the wider debate over Belize’s cost of living and the cost of doing business.
