Health expert, Dr Abdullahi Nasiru, has warned Nigerians that symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease can sometimes mimic malaria, urging residents to seek proper medical attention instead of self medication.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Dr Nasiru said early symptoms of Ebola such as fever, headache, weakness, muscle pain and fatigue are similar to those commonly associated with malaria, making it difficult for some people to quickly detect the deadly disease.
According to him, many Nigerians often assume every fever related illness is malaria, a habit he described as dangerous.
“Ebola symptoms can mimic malaria at the early stage. Fever, body weakness, headache and vomiting are signs many people ignore or treat casually at home,” Nasiru said.
He advised the general public to immediately visit a hospital once symptoms persist or worsen, stressing that early dictation and treatment remain critical in containing infectious diseases.
Nasiru also called on health authorities to intensify public awareness campaigns, especially in rural communities, to prevent panic and misinformation during disease outbreaks.
He urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with infected persons and report suspected cases to health officials promptly.
