Even More Times Denzel Washington Wasn’t Playing Around With Interviewers, Photographers

When it comes to Hollywood legends, Denzel Washington isn’t just a star…he’s the whole galaxy. Charismatic on screen, hilariously unpredictable in interviews and often unbothered by glitz and glam of the industry, Washington has mastered the art of keeping it real.

Over the course of his decades long career, it’s become increasingly clear that he’s not here for gimmicks or games and he has no problem telling us that, whether the cameras are rolling or not. Even on red carpets, where most actors stick to generic soundbites, the “Highest 2 Lowest” star has always had a way of making headlines with one-liners or quick gems of wisdom.

The wild part about it is, he’s not trying to be viral–he just is.

While fans love him for it and some journalists get nervous around him for it, one things is clear: the internet can’t get enough of it. So, we thought it’d be fun to take a look back at the many times Denzel Washington reminded us why he’s one of the realest icons offscreen.

Denzel Clashes With Rude Paparazzi

In August 2025, Washington was taped by a photog who spouted him while riding in traffic. While an interaction like that is par for the course, where this whole situation went left is when the photog got annoyed when Washington wouldn’t sign an autograph for him. The photog subsequently told the “Gladiator II” star that he preferred him when he was drinking. What happened next is something you’ll just have to see for yourself.

During a recent interview with Bleacher Report, Washington spoke his mind about sports talking heads who seem to have so much to say about professional athletes and their performance, despite not ever being able to step on a field and do it themselves.

“Just because you can sit behind a desk and chit-chat doesn’t mean you can do a damn thing. Come get up here with me, let’s find out. Come get in the gym with me, let’s find out,” Washington said. Whew, talk that talk!

Denzel Claps Back Against “Cancel Culture”

Though cancel culture may be a real thing for some people, it’s not something Washington is ascribing to. In fact, the acting legend isn’t concerned about following anybody shared that he follows God and isn’t worried about public opinion.

Denzel Keeps It Real About Fame and Awards

@screenoffscript

Denzel Washington on winning awards ???? “I don’t do it for Oscars. I don’t care about that kind of stuff. I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s time when I won and shouldn’t have won and then didn’t win and should’ve won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.” (via YT/jakestakestv) #DenzelWashington #Oscars #Filmmaking #Highest2Lowest

Though many of his fans are proud that he’s a two tine Oscar-winning actor, for Washington, he doesn’t put too much stock into the awards. He’s moreso concerned about how he’s going to fare once his days on this side of heaven are over and he’s standing on the other side.

“Man gives the award, God gives the reward,” he said in part.

Denzel Calls Out Jerry Jones for Not Doing Right By His Black Players and Their Pay

Even Washington couldn’t help but engage in some sports talk, but things got turnt up a little more once the “Malcolm X” star called out Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for the pay fight he’s been allegedly having with his players.

“All money ain’t good money, Jerry! ALL MONEY AIN’T GOOD MONEY, JERRY!” he yelled. Football teams or not, that’s a pearl of wisdom we could all stand to remember because it’s hella real.

Denzel Keeps It Real About Making Marriage Work

As one of the few Black couples in Hollywood that have lasted so long, anyone would be curious to know exactly what it takes to make a marriage like that so successful. Thankfully, Washington dropped enough gems for all of us to start taking notes.

While some people were praising Ashton Hall for his morning routine, the “Gladiator II” star gave us a solid way to start the day and it all centers around staying in peace and staying off of our phones. (This might be tough to do, but the benefits will more than likely far outweigh the initial discomfort.)

Denzel Stresses the Importance of Getting and Staying In Shape

Even though Washington has now turned 70, at the time of this interview he stressed the importance of getting and staying physically fit before you get older. If that’s not motivation to get and stay in the gym, I don’t know what is!

“You prepare for war in times of peace. When you get to 60, I’m about to be 70, the war breaks out. And it’s too late on the battlefield, especially without ammunition. So get your gun clean now,” he said.

Cannes Film Festival is supposed to be sublime and classy, but this pushy photographer almost made Washington come out the bag on him for doing entirely too much. He’s told us all once before that he’s from “around the way,” it looks like he had to lowkey remind people that he’s not putting up with any disrespect!

Denzel Demands Respect From Paparazzi

@ayooobones

#DenzelWashington was fired up, going full “TrainingDay” as he let loose on a group of paparazzi … #hiphop

It’s one thing to ask a celebrity for an autograph, but it’s another when you’ve clearly crossed in line in your push to get what you want and somebody like Washington has to come over and check you about it. One thing we know and two things for certain, Washington is never hear for any sort of rudeness or people coming at him sideways. Sometimes you got to let them know you’re not here for and there will be consequences for actions!

“Alright, Darling”

There’s being friendly with a celebrity and then there’s being overly friendly with a legend like Washington. Clearly, this exchange was the latter but the “Training Day” was quick to politely put her in her place!
