Fired Up win in KFC Basketball debut

Fireman and former West Indies rugby winger Jerry Charles was the main man for KFC National Basketball League newcomers Fired Up Fitness, as they exercised their physical superiority in a come‑from‑behind 60–53 victory over East Coast Academy at the Beausejour Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

ECA got out to a fast start, leading 24-22 after the first quarter, but they were unable to sustain that momentum, scoring just 29 points over the next three quarters. Fired up Fitness kept swinging, eventually delivering the knockout punch in the final period. With just three minutes to go and a three-point lead, Charles sank a three-pointer to seal the game.

Charles eventually earned the KFC Player of the Game award, finishing with 14 points. He had to take up the bulk of the scoring, especially after Kerwin Sealy limped out of the game early in the third quarter with a hamstring injury, after scoring eight points and grabbing four rebounds. Simeon Medard and Simeon Hippolyte each chipped in with nine points.

For ECA, Sage Lewis had career-best and game-high figures of 25 points and 12 rebounds. Tyler “Shrimpy” Hubain also added seven points and nine rebounds for ECA.

Bonne Terre Blazers and Courts Jets will both be aiming for a second win on Friday. Their game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by ECA versus Morne Gladiators at 8 p.m.
