Four more Cars Seized as Probe into Anita Among Deepens

Security agencies have seized four more vehicles belonging to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, in a move that underscores an intensifying crackdown tied to ongoing corruption investigations within parliamentary circles.

The vehicles, which were picked from her residence in Nakasero, include a Mercedes-Benz, two Toyota Land Cruisers, and a Lexus. They were later transported under tight security and parked at Police Headquarters in Naguru.

This brings the total number of vehicles impounded so far to six. Earlier, operatives recovered a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover from Among’s residence in Kigo, in what officials describe as part of a coordinated evidence-gathering operation.

The latest seizures come nearly a week after security agencies launched a sweeping crackdown targeting individuals linked to alleged financial impropriety within Parliament. The operation, involving a joint team of police, military intelligence, and other state agencies, has steadily widened in scope, with investigators pursuing both assets and documentation believed to be connected to the case.

Sources close to the probe indicate that the crackdown is not limited to asset recovery alone. Authorities are also focusing on financial trails, procurement records, and internal parliamentary transactions, as they attempt to establish the extent of the alleged misconduct.

Several parliamentary staff and individuals previously associated with Among are said to have been questioned, while others remain under active surveillance. Investigators are reportedly examining communication records, bank transactions, and digital data retrieved from various locations that have already been searched.

The seizures of high-value assets, including vehicles, are understood to be part of efforts to secure property that may be subject to further legal proceedings, including possible forfeiture if linked to illicit activity.

Among, who recently withdrew from the race for Speaker of Parliament, has come under mounting scrutiny as the investigations gather pace. Her decision to step aside is widely seen within political circles as being influenced by the growing pressure from the unfolding probe.

In a statement issued earlier this week, she said her withdrawal followed “wide consultations and deep introspection,” and was intended to preserve unity within the ruling National Resistance Movement.

“I wish to draw the attention of the public to matters regarding the Speakership race. After wide consultations and deep introspection, and to maintain harmony and clarity in my beloved party, the National Resistance Movement, I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament,” she said.

Despite the high-profile nature of the operation, security agencies have remained largely tight-lipped about the specifics of the allegations. However, insiders suggest that the investigation is centered on suspected abuse of office, mismanagement of public funds, and irregular financial dealings linked to parliamentary processes.

The scale and coordination of the crackdown have sent ripples through both political and administrative circles. Within Parliament, there is growing anxiety, with some officials reportedly limiting public appearances and scaling back social media activity amid fears of being drawn into the investigations.

Analysts say the unfolding developments could mark one of the most consequential anti-corruption drives in recent years, particularly given the seniority of the individuals involved and the potential political implications.

With more searches, interrogations, and asset seizures expected, attention is now firmly fixed on how far the investigation will go   and whether it will ultimately lead to prosecutions.
