Ghana’s number one bank, GCB Bank PLC, has donated GH¢5 million in support of the Ghana Black Stars’ preparations ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, reinforcing the Bank’s long-standing commitment to sports development and national unity.
The cheque presentation ceremony was held at the Bank’s Head Office on the High Street in Accra yesterday, drawing senior officials from the bank, football administration, and government.
Addressing guests at the event, Board Chairman of GCB Bank, Professor Joshua Alabi, stated that the bank had always believed in investing in the aspiration and talents of the Ghanaian people including sports development and he was confident that this support would contribute meaningfully towards adequate preparation and the overall success of the national team.
“GCB Bank is proud to support Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026, a moment of great national pride and unity. Football remains the single biggest unifying force in our country and it brings together people across ethnic, political, religious and social backgrounds under the national identity. Our donation of GH¢5 million reflects GCB’s commitment to national development beyond banking and finance. Over the years, GCB Bank has consistently supported sports, youth development and community initiatives because we believe sports needs discipline, leadership, patriotism and economic opportunities,” he added.
Prof. Alabi further commended all stakeholders working tirelessly to support the Black Stars ahead of the global tournament.
The Managing Director of GCB Bank, Farihan Alhassan, added that the Bank’s support formed part of its broader mandate to strengthen national cohesion through impactful partnerships.
“At GCB, we recognise that the Black Stars embody unity and shared purpose. Supporting them is consistent with our commitment to national development and the aspirations of the people we serve,” he said.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Ministry, Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr Kofi Adams, expressed profound gratitude to GCB Bank, noting that GCB Bank’s support would go a long way to touch the lives of every Ghanaian passionate about football and the Ghana Black Stars’ journey to the World Cup.
He said, “the support from GCB Bank is timely and deeply valued. The Black Stars represent the hope of the nation, and collaborations like this strengthen our ability to prepare and compete with confidence.”
He added that through the support of government and fundraising efforts including donations from GCB Bank, the Ministry has been able to secure broadcast rights to telecast the World Cup matches live on selected media stations.
This generous contribution is a testament to GCB Bank’s unwavering commitment to national development and its belief in the power of sport to unite and inspire Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
